Psychotherapy is inherently challenging, AND, working with folks with attachment injuries (insecure attachment) adds increased complexity and requires a nuanced understanding of how relational trauma impacts the patient’s capacity and the psychotherapeutic process.

Because insecure attachment operates as a defense mechanism against early trauma—and interrupts the full maturation of the right brain—it creates challenges that are often missed or misinterpreted in psychotherapy, frequently disrupting the therapeutic relationship. To navigate this, there are six key aspects that help clinicians and patients better understand not only what is happening, but why it is happening. This offers a vital conceptual map to understand the implications of insecure attachment for people and the therapeutic process.
 
These significant relational trauma injuries, namely insecure attachment, affect over 42% of the population. This lecture will outline six aspects of insecure attachment that make therapy and process more difficult. By understanding these underlying dynamics, clinicians can better recognize what needs attending, help mitigate misunderstandings, alleviate the blame and shame that often stall progress for both therapist and patient. It will also speak in broad and general terms of how to attend to those aspects from an embodied, relational lens.
